[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]CODE OF CONDUCT
This Code of Conduct applies to all KAIS members. KAIS aims to facilitate the collaboration of member schools in order to uphold the highest possible standards within the international education sector in Kenya. All member schools shall make a commitment to adhere to this Code of Conduct and abide by Kenyan law.
- Each school’s current Governing Body Representative and the Head are required to sign this Code of Conduct.
- Where schools have more than one campus that is apart from the main site, separate applications for membership to the KAIS Leadership Group shall be made in writing by the Head of each campus. The membership would, in such circumstances, extend to each Head of school/campus. This is for the purpose of ensuring each separate campus adheres to the standards set by this Code of Conduct. Satellite schools need not wait for the five-year period required to enable them to join the KAIS Leadership Group. Their applications will be processed as soon as they are received by the vetting committee.
- Once a school/school section/ is accepted by the KAIS Leadership Group, the member Head must attend at least one of the three meetings held each academic year. If a member Head misses all the three meetings in a year, it shall mean that the school’s membership in the KAIS Leadership Group is held in abeyance until the absence is explained in writing to the Membership Committee.
- All Heads are expected to attend the regular KAIS Leadership Group meetings. A school may send the Acting Head if duly appointed and only if the Head is away for a prolonged period of time. The Leadership Chair should be notified in writing prior to the meeting.
- All schools should in practice:
-
- Provide evidence of a commitment to professional development for their members of staff.
- Provide evidence of a commitment to safeguarding
- Be clearly seen to pursue the aims of a recognised international education system/syllabus.
- Have an educational programme that demonstrates ‘value added’ criteria that ensures the quality of the extra-curricular provision.
- Provide evidence of a dedication to quality assurance. This may be demonstrated through membership of an international organisation (eg IAPS, COBIS), or by providing a plan and timelines for belonging to one.
- Comply with statutory requirements in everyday operations. All teachers should be registered with the Teachers’ Service Commission.
- Ensure that they can contribute meaningfully to the education sector in Kenya.
- At or before his/her final Heads’ meeting, an outgoing Head shall introduce his/her successor. Such a succession process is considered ‘standard’ and the new Head is welcomed to join and so attend subsequent meetings upon signing the Code of Conduct. If the standard handover process has not taken place, then the membership of that school or section in the KAIS Leadership Group will be held in abeyance until an approach and application has been made by the new Head.
- If a Head is dismissed outside the standard succession practice outlined above, the school’s membership will be held in abeyance until a new Head is introduced and the issue is resolved.
- The right of a person to visit and to consider employment in a school other than the one in which he/she is currently employed, without notifying the current employer, shall be respected.
- The current employer shall respect the wishes of employees in seeking to further their own careers and/or professional development in another member school without fear of reprimand from their current employer.
- The right of a school to meet with or interview a teacher employed in another school without notifying the other school shall be respected. However, the potential employer, prior to offering a contract or position, shall contact the current employer.
- No school shall attempt to influence a person to break contract already signed with another school.
- The right of a pupil and his/her parents to visit and consider schools is recognised, as is the right of other schools to hold preliminary discussions about possible admission without notifying the school of current attendance.
- No school shall admit a pupil from another member school without receipt of a Leaving Certificate, or verbal confirmation of the same, prior to admission. A Leaving Certificate must not be issued unless all obligations by the parent to the school have been met.
- All member schools shall be committed to the principle of shared in-service training, hosting of in-service training events, and attendance by staff who should contribute whole-heartedly to the programme.
- There shall be a commitment to observe the published guidelines relating to sports fixtures.
- There shall be a commitment to ensure that member schools do not at any point bring the sector into disrepute.
- The KAIS membership committee has an arbitration role between member(ship) schools in the case of a breach in the Code of Conduct. In such case sanctions could apply.
